A lone Subway employee in Kitimat, B.C., got the surprise of her life this summer, when dark and early one morning a black bear with the munchies wandered into the deserted sandwich joint hoping to find a snack.
The persistent bear managed to open the restaurant door and walk inside.
The employee, working all alone in the kitchen, realized a bear, and not a regular human customer, had come into the restaurant when the sound of the door opening caused her to look up at an overhead security monitor. She took cover inside a bathroom, where she locked the door. (Fortunately, she had a cell phone with her, and was able to call for help).
The amazing part of the story is that the juvenile bear’s visit was captured by nine surveillance cameras placed throughout the restaurant. Canadian Press has edited the footage into a must-see video clip. It’s available here:
After sniffing around rather patiently and even hopping up onto the deli counter to inspect an empty sandwich assembly line, the bear left the northwest B.C. Subway the same way it came in – through the front glass door – without getting anything to eat.
Regrettably, police were later forced to shoot the bear since it would likely return and pose a threat to humans.
This was one of the most memorable reality videos of 2008, and for good reason: you just won’t believe your eyes. That’s some bear.
