“Somewhere between Christmas and being buried alive is PMS”
Behold SCTV’s deadliest satiric weapon: the devastating comic stylings of towering talents Catherine O’Hara and Andrea Martin.
They star in a groundbreaking (well, it sure is compared to the crap that masquerades as comedy at SNL these days) and kinda hilarious film short send-up from, oh, like 25 years ago.
Watch it and weep as you realize just how pathetically far the TV sketch comedy bar has fallen since.
Warning: consuming liquids while viewing this could be hazardous to your health.
Interesting to note the out-of-the-closet-like way the topic of PMS is handled. Makes you wonder which came first, the condition or the acronym, which is now ubiquitous. And feel vindicated in particular by the knowing characterization of Anna Ricco: PMS Crossing Guard.
And remember: There’s no high like a PMS high!

Hey does anyone have a copy of this film? I can’t believe that SCTV has yanked it from YouTube. I really want to see it again!
Oh no! When did THAT happen? What a drag. Sorry folks who wander to this post hoping to see the skit once again. (I’m not even sure if or when this short originally aired on SCTV; I think the YouTube clip was from an appearance of O’Hara and Martin on Letterman.)
While I understand the SCTV alumni copyright concerns, I think there’s a valid argument that having material on YouTube is great, free publicity for performing artists, and connects a classic show like this to a whole new generation of fans who might never have heard about it.
Oh well. Maybe it’s a sign that another set of DVDs featuring later seasons is on the way. That would be good news.
Yes, it was a Letterman appearance. He asked a number of people to produce short films and this was theirs. I have an old copy of it on videotape. It remains a favorite.
Patina– do you have the ability to send me a copy of your copy? I am looking for it desperately and can’t find it anywhere? If so, just reply to this and I will get in touch with you! Thank you!
I have been quoting this sketch for YEARS! It was brilliant. So sorry it’s not available anymore . . .
